From Finance to Landscape Architecture, via spells spent in Italy, Spain, South Africa and Brazil, last year’s Jersey overall winner Florian de Poray has certainly had an eclectic career but is very happy with his latest role – and he shared his thoughts on his win.
Florian is the proud owner of a fabulous little delicatessen – Relish – in Jersey’s Fish Market and last year he won not only the Employee of a small sized business Award, but also scooped the overall individual prize against all other category winners.
Great customer service seems to form the backbone of Florian’s business ethic:
“Customer service can be the real differentiator for a company”, he explains.
“It’s a tough economic climate out there and to give that little extra can make all the difference. Apart from providing the highest quality of really interesting and eclectic foods and wines, I think my customers value the interaction with staff and other shoppers and are able to exchange ideas and inspiration ”.
Florian proudly displays his two awards on his counter and he was delighted with the publicity that the event generated for him – even though he was genuinely surprised at his success.
“I hadn’t even been open for a year so I was shocked to have won my category, and if I am totally honest I hadn’t realised that there was an overall winner award so I didn’t even hear my name read out!
It was a great event though and I would certainly encourage everyone to get involved”.
So does he have any tips?
“My business attracts a good number of repeat customers and so I am constantly sourcing new products so that their experience is always fresh. Encouraging interaction, providing tastings and the opportunity to sample unfamiliar items all adds to the joy of fine dining – a warm welcome and a smile also helps! . I get a real buzz when I know that a customer has walked away happy.”
